NED adjusts admissions as Karachi’s inter results decline

NED University of Engineering and Technology has revised its admission policy for the upcoming 2025/26 academic session in response to the significantly low pass rates in Karachi’s intermediate examinations, as reported by electronic media. The students can check the latest information of NED University Adjusts Admission Policy Following Karachi’s Low HSSC Pass Rates.
Greater Focus on Entrance Test Scores
The university has reduced the weightage of intermediate results for BE and BS admissions while increasing the emphasis on entrance test scores. The new merit calculation formula will prioritize performance in the entrance test.
Declining Pass Rates Prompt Policy Overhaul
The decision follows a steep decline in Karachi’s intermediate pass rates, with only 29% of pre-engineering and 35% of pre-medical students clearing their exams. A fact-finding committee, led by Provincial Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah, had recommended increasing marks by 15-20% in physics, chemistry, and mathematics to address the issue, but these suggestions have not been implemented.
New Admission Requirements and Seat Allocation
As part of the revised policy, only students who have secured at least 57% marks in their intermediate exams will be eligible to apply. This change may result in a significant number of students being unable to participate in the admission process. Previously, the selection criteria were evenly split, with 50% weightage given to both intermediate results and the entrance test. Under the new system, entrance test scores will now contribute 60%, while intermediate results will account for 40%.
Admission Timeline and Academic Session Schedule
The academic council has announced that the admission advertisement will be released in the last week of March. The first entrance test will take place on May 24, followed by a second test on July 12. The new academic session is set to begin on August 18, with 3,016 seats available across 35 programs. Additionally, 100 seats have been added to accommodate more students.
Maintaining Academic Standards Amid Challenges
By adjusting its admission policy, NEDUET aims to uphold the quality of its selection process while adapting to the current educational challenges. The increased reliance on entrance test scores ensures a fair evaluation of candidates despite the declining intermediate exam results.
