The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC has recently implemented significant changes to the English language test requirements for students applying through the Study Direct Stream SDS program. These changes, effective from August 10, 2023, offer applicants a wider range of options when submitting their English language proficiency results. The candidates, who seek admission in the Canadian universities, they can get the updates regarding Canada Expands English Language Test Options for Student Visa Applicants.

Diverse Accepted Exams

Under the revised guidelines, applicants now have the flexibility to submit English language results from various internationally recognized tests. The acceptable exams include the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program CELPIP General, Canadian Academic English Language CAEL Test, Pearson Test of English PTE Academic, and Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL iBT. This expansion provides international students with greater choices to showcase their language proficiency.

Recognized and Versatile Tests

PTE and TOEFL, in particular, are widely recognized in Canada and other countries. Students planning to study in Australia can benefit from PTE, while TOEFL is accepted by destinations such as the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and the majority of universities in the UK. These tests offer students more opportunities and flexibility when planning their educational journey.

Modified IELTS Academic Requirement

The requirement for IELTS Academic test takers has also been modified. Previously, individuals had to achieve a minimum score of 6.0 in all individual bands of the test. However, this specific requirement has been removed. Now, the only mandatory criterion is a minimum overall band score of 6.0, without any specified minimum scores for the individual skills Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.

Enhanced Accessibility for International Students

The primary aim of these changes is to make the application process more accessible and accommodating for international students aspiring to study in Canada. By expanding the range of accepted English language proficiency exams and modifying the IELTS Academic requirement, the IRCC aims to create a more inclusive and flexible pathway for students from around the world to pursue their education in Canada.
