Adjustments During Smog Alert
To counter the severe smog conditions in November, the government temporarily delayed school start times to 8:45 a.m. on November 18. This measure was aimed at minimizing the harmful impact of air pollution on students and educators.
Return to Normal Schedule
With the smog situation improving, the Environmental Protection Agency EPA Punjab has issued a notification to revert to the standard schedule. Under the Environmental Protection Act of 1997, all public and private schools must open at 8:15 a.m. starting December 4.
Monitoring and Legal Actions
Imran Hamed Sheikh, Director-General of Environment, has warned of strict legal action, including fines, for any institution failing to comply with the updated timings. The notification also instructs commissioners and deputy commissioners to ensure the directive is enforced uniformly across the province.
Protecting Health Without Disrupting Education
The adjustment in school hours strikes a balance between protecting the health of students and teachers and maintaining the continuity of education. This decision underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing environmental and public health concerns.
