Punjab Private Schools Accused of Illegal Fee Hikes

Private schools across Punjab have raised tuition fees right before the start of summer vacation, disregarding a court order that limits such increases. The issue was raised during a session of the Punjab Assembly, where several lawmakers criticized the move and called for strict action. MPA Ahmad Rasheed Bhatti addressed the assembly, revealing that some institutions have increased fees by Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 8,000 per student — a jump of up to 26%. He emphasized that this hike is especially troubling as classes will be suspended for the next three months. Bhatti also reminded members that the Lahore High Court had clearly ruled that only 50% of the usual monthly fee can be charged during the summer break. “These schools are openly violating the court’s ruling,” he stated.
In response, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan described the fee hikes as unfair and harsh, and instructed the Education Minister to intervene. The minister assured the House that a thorough investigation would be carried out without delay.
The issue of unlawful charges by private schools is not new. Last year, the Directorate of Private Institutions issued a warning against collecting any fees beyond regular tuition and admission charges. It also prohibited schools from forcing parents to purchase school-branded stationery.
The case has now been handed over to the Standing Committee on Schools, which is expected to look into the matter and recommend appropriate action.
