PMDC Confirms Fee Hike for Private Medical & Dental Institut

Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC has approved a new plan to regulate tuition fees in private medical and dental colleges, as reported by ARY News on Tuesday. These recommendations have been submitted to a special committee for further review, with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar set to make the final decision as the head of the medical education committee. Proposed Fee Limits and Rejected Suggestions
According to the proposal, private medical colleges will have an annual fee range between Rs1.8 million and Rs2.5 million. A previous suggestion to lower the fee structure to Rs1.2 million–Rs1.5 million was dismissed by representatives of private institutions. Currently, students are paying between Rs2.5 million and Rs3.5 million per year for medical education.
Additional Financial and Welfare Requirements
The proposal also includes an annual 5% tuition fee hike. Additionally, affiliated teaching hospitals must reserve 35% of their beds for underprivileged patients. To support financially struggling students, private colleges will be required to offer five scholarships per year and introduce flexible installment payment plans.
Consensus Among Private Colleges
Reports indicate that private medical and dental colleges have agreed to these recommendations. Previously, in 2012, PMDC had set an annual tuition cap of Rs500,000 with a 5% yearly increase, but many institutions failed to comply with these regulations.
Efforts to Resolve Fee Disparities
In July of last year, PMDC sought legal advice from the health ministry to create a standardized tuition structure. However, despite months of discussions, the issue of excessively high fees in private medical institutions remains unresolved.
