SBBU Lyari to Launch BS Nursing and DPT Courses in 2026

Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University SBBU, located in Lyari, is set to broaden its academic scope by initiating two new professional programmes — BS in Nursing and Doctor of Physical Therapy DPT — starting from the 2026 academic year. This development signals a pivotal move from theoretical disciplines to more practical, skill-based education. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Hussain Mehdi shared that the academic council has formally approved both courses. Preparations for the launch are currently in motion, with final admissions pending the necessary financial authorizations from concerned government departments. Admissions Halted in Certain Departments Due to Staffing Concerns
In a discussion with The New Channel, Prof Mehdi noted that admissions in fields such as International Relations, Media Sciences, and Sports Sciences have been suspended for the time being. This decision came after the Sindh Higher Education Commission flagged the shortage of permanent teaching staff in these departments. The university has already requested permission from the Chief Minister to appoint qualified faculty. Once sanctioned, advertisements for recruitment will be issued, and the university aims to restart admissions in these areas in the subsequent academic year.
Uncollected Fees From Affiliated Colleges Recovered
Professor Mehdi also revealed that for a decade, SBBU had not charged examination or affiliation fees from its affiliated colleges. Despite this, the university continued to conduct exams, absorbing all related expenses, which added to its financial woes. Recent administrative action has led to the recovery of Rs3.5 million in outstanding dues within a span of three months. These funds are now being directed towards vital campus improvements, ensuring better facilities and an enhanced academic atmosphere for both students and staff.
Infrastructure Upgrades Funded Through Internal Resources
The Vice Chancellor outlined several recent infrastructure enhancements made possible by the recovered funds. These include the installation of better lighting in educational spaces, repainting of walls, false ceilings, and the creation of a new syndicate hall with built-in recording technology. A faculty lounge with a contemporary design, dubbed ‘Lyari Jeans’, has been introduced. Construction of a student cafeteria is ongoing, and the university gymnasium is undergoing extensive renovation to provide improved facilities for physical education and recreation.
Restoration Efforts Undertaken Without Government Support
Reflecting on the state of the campus when he assumed leadership, Prof Mehdi described it as rundown, with broken infrastructure, faulty wiring, and classrooms lacking even basic necessities like fans. Despite receiving no financial aid from either the federal or provincial governments, the administration has independently initiated a comprehensive restoration project. These efforts are part of a broader goal to foster a more professional and welcoming environment, helping SBBU evolve into a vibrant academic institution aligned with modern educational standards.
