Punjab to Ending Saturday Break in Schools

Punjab School Education Department is considering eliminating the Saturday holiday in schools to make up for the lost instructional time due to smog-related closures and other unscheduled holidays. If implemented, this change would extend the school week to six days, providing students with additional learning hours. The students can check the fresh updates that Punjab Mulls Over Ending Saturday Break in Schools to Offset Lost Learning Days.

Reduced Academic Calendar

Due to frequent unplanned holidays, the academic year in Punjab has been cut down to only 112 days, far short of the international standard of 245 days. This shortened academic year is particularly concerning for students in grades 9 and 10, who are preparing for important exams and need adequate preparation time.

Effect of Smog and Extended Winter Breaks

The ongoing smog issue continues to impact schools, with closures beginning as early as November. Additionally, winter breaks have been extended in recent years, further shortening the academic year. With the winter holidays approaching, the loss of classroom time is expected to worsen.

Challenges in Compensating for Lost Time

Both teachers and education experts are worried about the challenge of making up for lost teaching time. The government has not called teachers in during holidays, and conducting online lessons has proven to be difficult given the circumstances.

Six-Day Week to Make Up for Lost Instruction

The potential shift to a six-day school week is being considered as a solution to recoup the lost instructional time. This extended school week aims to provide students with the necessary support and education despite the ongoing disruptions from smog and other breaks.
