Punjab to Convert Commerce Colleges into IT Institutions

Conversion of 85 Commerce Colleges

A total of 85 government commerce colleges in Punjab will undergo a transformation to become IT institutions. This move comes in response to declining student enrollment in commerce programs.

Financial and Enrollment Concerns

A report from the Higher Education Department highlights that each commerce college currently has fewer than 100 students. The government expenditure per commerce student is up to Rs. 300,000. The high cost and low enrollment rates have led to the decision to convert these colleges into IT institutes to reduce expenses and better align educational offerings with job market requirements.

New Facilities and Expert Hiring

The conversion process will include hiring industry experts and upgrading facilities to support the new IT focus. Enhancements will feature co-working spaces for young IT entrepreneurs and e-libraries to support research and learning.

Rapid Implementation

The project is expected to begin within the next 10 days, with a goal of completing the transformation promptly. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat stressed that this initiative aims to elevate Punjab’s standing in the global IT sector.
