Punjab Revamps Matric Curriculum with New Subject Choices

Punjab School Education Department SED is set to expand the curriculum for matriculation students in the upcoming academic year, offering new subject groups that go beyond the traditional science and arts tracks. Four new specialized groups—Health Sciences, Agriculture, Information Technology IT, and Entrepreneurship—will be introduced, giving students the opportunity to select their area of focus from the ninth grade and continue in that field throughout their secondary education. Details on the New Subject Groups

As stated by SED Secretary Khalid Naeem Wattoo, the four new subject groups being introduced are Agriculture, IT, Fashion Designing, and Health Sciences. The curriculum will offer a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, with a breakdown of 35 marks allocated for theory and 40 marks for practical work. This balance between classroom instruction and hands-on learning is expected to provide students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for future career paths.

 

Teacher Training to Support New Curriculum

To implement these new subjects, the SED has opted for an efficient solution by upskilling existing teachers rather than hiring new staff. Many current educators already have relevant backgrounds, such as engineering or computer science, and will undergo specialized training to teach the new subjects. This approach allows for a seamless integration of the new curriculum without the need for additional recruitment.

 

Maintaining the Existing Examination Framework

The overall matriculation exam structure will remain the same, with the total marks staying at 1,100. The newly introduced subjects will simply be incorporated into the existing framework. This ensures that while students will have the option to choose new fields of study, the examination process remains consistent and familiar.

 

Official Confirmation of the Curriculum Update

SED spokesperson Noorul Huda confirmed the inclusion of these new subject groups, emphasizing that they are part of an effort to bring the curriculum in line with international standards. This expansion of subject options is expected to provide students with a wider range of choices, giving them the opportunity to pursue specialized education in fields that align with their career goals.

 

Educational Community’s Response and Suggestions

Educationist Rana Liaqat welcomed the move, praising the introduction of new subject groups as a positive development that will diversify educational options for students. However, he stressed that to fully benefit from these new subjects, there is a need to upgrade science and IT laboratories in schools. Liaqat pointed out that while previous administrations had introduced similar vocational tracks, many of the associated laboratories were not operational, limiting their effectiveness.

 

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges

Liaqat also highlighted the need for functional science group labs in schools to ensure students can receive the hands-on training they need. He further recommended the appointment of qualified teachers in fields such as Agriculture, Fashion Designing, and Textiles, to ensure that the new subjects are taught effectively. This would ensure that the students are not only exposed to theoretical knowledge but are also given the practical skills needed to succeed in these emerging fields.
