Private Schools Oppose Extension of Winter Vacation by Govt

In response to the ongoing smog crisis and cold weather conditions, the Punjab government is planning a winter vacation in December. The break aims to reduce health risks from the poor air quality, particularly in the Potohar region and Murree, where the pollution levels have worsened significantly. The government’s proposed break is 20 days long, extending until January 10, 2025. This proposal was announced by Khalid Nazir Watoo, the Secretary of Schools in Punjab. However, the Private Schools Association has expressed concerns over the extended duration, urging the authorities to reconsider the length of the vacation.

Private Schools Association’s Response

Abrar Ahmed Khan, the President of the All Pakistan Private Schools Association for North Punjab, has criticized the extended holiday. He highlighted that the academic schedule has already been disrupted due to long summer vacations, school closures caused by smog, and various public protests. To limit further disruptions to students education, Khan suggested shortening the vacation to 10 days, starting on January 1.

Punjab has witnessed repeated school closures due to high smog levels. Recently, several districts, including Lahore, had to shut down schools for several days because of hazardous air quality.
