Pakistan Launches First Government Autism School

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has introduced Pakistan’s first state-run autism school in Lahore, designed to ease the financial strain on families with autistic children. She acknowledged these children as special heroes and reaffirmed her dedication to strengthening special education facilities throughout Punjab.
Autism School to Provide Free Care and Education
The upcoming autism school in Lahore is nearing completion and will offer free treatment and education for children with autism. Expected to be completed within a year, this institution is part of a broader initiative, with ten autism units already operational in different special education schools across Punjab. Special Assistant Sania Ashiq has been appointed to monitor the school’s development.
Assistive Devices Distributed to Special Needs Students
To further aid children with disabilities, the Punjab government has distributed 9,206 assistive tools, including 7,702 hearing aids, 360 wheelchairs, 300 walkers, 344 crutches, and 500 white canes. These provisions aim to improve accessibility and quality of life for special needs students.
Improvements in Special Education and Career Opportunities
The government has upgraded 35 special education schools and is working on converting 28 institutions into excellence centers. A customized curriculum for students up to grade 5 has been developed, including a translated Holy Quran for the hearing-impaired. Additionally, skill-based training programs are being created, and a job fair, in partnership with private organizations, is in the pipeline to enhance employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. So far, 900 students have been enrolled, 25 have secured jobs, and 14 have completed the first batch of the Special Education Vocational Matriculation program.
Technological Advancements and Sporting Events for Special Students
A School Information System and a smart monitoring app are being introduced to modernize the special education sector. Furthermore, 586 students from special education centers have transitioned into mainstream schools. In an effort to promote extracurricular activities, Punjab’s first large-scale sports gala for special students is being organized. Additionally, eight new special education school buildings have been completed, with approval given for the construction of nine more. To address the needs of slow learners, a specialized screening tool has also been introduced in special education institutions.
