Medical and Dental Colleges Banned from Filling Vacant Seats

The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council PMDC has issued a strict order preventing medical and dental colleges from filling their vacant seats on their own. In a notification sent to college principals, PMDC Registrar Dr. Shaista highlighted that only the admitting universities have the authority to manage admissions, as per the regulations specified in Section 175 of the PMDC Act, 2022. Admissions to Be Conducted by Designated Universities
The directive makes it clear that admitting universities in each province or region are responsible for overseeing the entire admission process for all affiliated colleges. Dr. Shaista emphasized that any admissions made under PMDC’s amnesty program will only be valid if processed through the officially appointed admitting university.
Updated Merit Rules for Private Medical and Dental Colleges
Recently, PMDC revised the merit requirements related to vacant seats in private medical and dental schools. The minimum passing marks for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test MDCAT have been lowered—now requiring 50% for MBBS candidates and 45% for BDS applicants. These changes aim to facilitate the admission of more students while maintaining a standardized merit framework.
Liaquat Medical University Granted Exclusive Admission Rights in Sindh
For the Sindh province, Liaquat Medical University Jamshoro has been assigned exclusive responsibility to conduct admissions for vacant seats. Candidates applying through this university must pay an admission fee of Rs. 4,500, in addition to Rs. 7,000 for the entrance examination fee charged by the testing agency.
PMDC Highlights Importance of Compliance
The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council reiterated that strict adherence to these rules is essential, warning institutions that admissions made outside the approved procedures will not be recognized. The council aims to ensure a fair, transparent, and legally compliant admission process across all medical and dental colleges in Pakistan.
