University of Karachi has announced a significant change in its academic structure by introducing a semester-based system for its Associate Degree AD programs in Arts, Science, and Commerce. These programs, which replace the traditional BA, B.Sc, and B.Com degrees, will be offered in both public and private affiliated colleges under the new framework. The students can access to KU to Shift Associate Degree Programs to Semester System.

New Semester Framework

According to the revised system, students will study the syllabus in two halves, with exams conducted twice a year. Each semester will span six months, consisting of five months for instruction and one month for examinations. This approach is designed to enhance the learning experience, providing students with a more streamlined and structured educational journey.

Alignment with HEC Standards

This transition aligns with the Higher Education Commissions HEC updated policy, which mandates a standardized Associate Degree program across Pakistan. The HEC’s guidelines aim to phase out the older two-year graduation system, ensuring that public universities modernize their curricula and teaching methods. Karachi University’s move reflects a commitment to staying at the forefront of these national educational reforms.

Approval Process and Implementation Timeline

The semester-based system is currently under review by Karachi University’s Academic Council. Professor Dr. Anila Amber Malik, Secretary of the Affiliation Committee, has submitted a detailed report on the proposed changes. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi has included this proposal in the agenda for the Academic Council meeting scheduled for December 3. If endorsed, the new system will apply to students enrolling in AD programs for the next academic cycle.

Examination Management and Accessibility

Unlike the previous assessment method, where colleges evaluated 40% of marks and the university assessed 60%, the proposed system will centralize exams entirely under Karachi University’s Examination Department. This decision accommodates both regular and private candidates, the latter of whom can register directly with the university without attending college. Exams will carry 100 marks per subject and will take place every 5 to 7 months in accordance with semester regulations.

Structured Curriculum and Competitive Edge

The curriculum for the Associate Degree programs in Commerce, Science, and Arts will now be divided into four semesters, ensuring a comprehensive and cohesive teaching process in affiliated colleges. This change is vital for public universities to remain competitive with private institutions, which have already adopted semester-based systems in compliance with HEC’s new policy.

Setting a in Higher Education

Karachi University is set to become one of the first public sector universities in Pakistan to fully embrace a semester-based structure for its AD programs. This bold step not only brings the institution in line with international education standards but also ensures a more dynamic and adaptable academic system for students in affiliated colleges.
