University of Karachi has issued revised regulations regarding student dress code, aiming to ensure appropriate and respectful clothing on campus. In an official notice issued on January 14, 2025, Dr. Nosheen Raza, the Students’ Adviser, outlined the universitys dress code expectations. The new guidelines mandate that students wear neat, modest, and professional attire that aligns with the academic environment. Restrictions on Inappropriate Clothing and Footwear

As part of the updated dress code, the university has prohibited clothing that may be considered inappropriate or disruptive to the academic setting. Specifically, the ban includes revealing or see-through clothes, shorts, sleeveless or tight-fitting outfits, and any attire featuring offensive language or imagery. Additionally, casual footwear such as flip-flops is no longer permitted on campus grounds. The Karachi University intends these measures to maintain discipline and a focused academic atmosphere.

Rationale Behind the Dress Code Rules

Dr. Raza spoke to the media, explaining that such dress code notifications are regularly issued to ensure the university maintains a well-disciplined environment. With more than 45,000 students currently enrolled, Karachi University is one of Pakistan’s largest educational institutions, and it’s essential to uphold standards of respect and professionalism on campus, she shared with Geo.tv. The announcement coincides with the start of the new academic year, with the university seeing an increase in student enrollment and new admissions, including evening programs.

Reflecting the University’s Values Through Attire

Dr. Raza further clarified that the universitys dress code aligns with its core values, aiming to foster an atmosphere of respect and modesty among the student body. The dress code is seen as an essential part of promoting a professional and respectful environment conducive to learning. By adhering to these standards, the university seeks to ensure that all students contribute to a dignified and focused academic environment
