AS Level Maths Exam Cancelled by Cambridge Over Paper Leak
Cambridge Assessment International Education CAIE, a provider of international Cambridge qualifications, serves over 10,000 schools in more than 160 countries. Operating as a non-profit, non-teaching department of the University of Cambridge, CAIE recently faced a significant challenge with the cancellation of an AS Level exam paper due to a leak.
Details of the Incident
Approximately three months ago, CAIE began receiving allegations regarding a potential leak of the AS Level Mathematics exam scheduled for 2nd May. After a thorough investigation, CAIE confirmed that the exam paper had been leaked on social media before the test date. Consequently, CAIE decided to cancel the exam, disappointing many students who had prepared diligently.
Assessed Marks and Retake Options
In response to the situation, CAIE informed schools that students would receive assessed marks for the AS Level Mathematics paper. This means students marks will be based on their performance in other mathematics exams. Students dissatisfied with this decision have the option to retake the exam in November 2024.
Ensuring Fairness and Integrity
CAIE emphasized their priority of ensuring fairness for the majority of students who did not cheat. Their goal is to prevent any unfair advantage gained through cheating and to ensure all students are evaluated equally for university admissions. This incident underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity and credibility of the examination process, ensuring that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed based on their merits.
Commitment to Security and Fairness
CAIE is dedicated to improving exam security in Pakistan and worldwide. They expressed gratitude for the patience and support from students and schools as they work to address the issue. CAIE noted that such incidents are extremely rare and that they have refined security measures, including time-zone variant papers, to prevent future leaks.
By reinforcing their security protocols, CAIE aims to uphold the fairness and credibility of their exams, ensuring all students are treated equally and evaluated on their merits.
